About Us

Barton Sound is owned and operated by Paul and Roslyn Barton.

Paul Barton, that’s me, was born in Mudgee and educated at Mudgee Public School and Mudgee High School. I left school at the age of 14 working at Loneragan, Roth and Kellett stores and later managing Kellett’s Liquor Store for 7 years.

How did I become involved in sound production? (Some say I haven’t been sound for years). The local radio station owner-manager, Ron Camplin, ran a competition over the school holidays to discover the junior announcer of the year. There were 200 contestants. I won.

This was the start of many interesting years. I appeared in the local musical production of “South Pacific” at the Civic Theatre (now Woolworths Liquor & Mudgee Metroplaza), to an audience of 600 people a night over 3 nights. This led to many stage performances over the years.

Mudgee Branch of the Masonic Lodge was having a “Ladies Night” at the Mudgee Bowling Club. Their request was: can you supply the Music DJ but no “Boom Boom” music etc. Just Old time, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Barn Dance. Next day I had a request for me to be the DJ a Wedding at the Mudgee Bowling Club in 6 months time.

For over 22 years, Paul Barton has been a DJ. As well as being home based in Mudgee, he has travelled to nearby villages and towns. His DJ work presenting 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s music at venues in Gulgong, Rylstone, Kandos, Coolah & Dunedoo.

Joe Hughes, a local theatre producer developed a Supper Theatre concept melodrama with the audience encouraged to “Boo” the Villain and “Cheer” the Hero. The venue was the Mudgee Soldiers’ Club over 12 years, 1 became involved in Sound & Lighting Special FX (read effects) for each series of shows which played for 8 weeks on 3 nights for each show.

The big hit was “Dimboola”, and yes I played the “Groom”. It was supposed to be 6 weeks season that was extended for 12 weeks playing 3 nights each week including tours to towns close to Mudgee.

In the meantime Mr Roger Wootton State MLA for the old seat of Burrendong arranged for my attendance at Radio School in Sydney.

Over the years I have provided and operated equipment for many conferences of 300-400 people. Similar events often occur over 3 days with 800-1200 in attendance. I supply a wide variety of lighting and sound equipment. I have recorded conference presentations with many memorable presenters. These conferences provide many stories, some will never be told but all are true.

Sound in all its forms and P.A. operation like many things graduated from being a “Hobby” that grew over the years, to becoming Full time around 12 years ago. The magic of a performance over many Rehearsals, sends an Electric Feeling of Success at a Performance.

Around 22 years ago Barton Sound graduated from a “Hobby” to a “Reality”. We look forward with confidence to the many years ahead in the Industry of Sound, Lighting & Visual effects.

Roslyn worked full time in a Chemist Dispensary while I built up the Audio Visual side of Barton Sound then in November 2006, after 33 years she retired. Her job at Barton Sound is to manage the Office side of things.
